What is Spina Bifida?
Spina bifida is the most frequently occurring permenently disabling birth defect. More children have spina bifida than have muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined. It is the most common type of neural tube defect (NTD), in which the spinal chord is not completely enclosed in the spine at birth. Because of paralysis resulting from damage to the spinal chord, people born with spina bifida may need surgeries and extensive on-going medical care.
The Spina Bifida Association of America
The SBAA was founded in 1973 to address the needs of the spina bifida community, and serves as the national representative of over 70 chapters nationwide. The Mission of the SBAA is to promote the prevention of spina bifida and to enhance the lives of all affected.
